The Grit and Grace of the Manhattan Bridge

The Manhattan Bridge has been more than just steel and stone for over a century — it has been a gateway. A span that doesn’t just carry cars, trains, and people, but stories. In 2019, I had the chance to capture it from this angle, and it reminded me why bridges have always fascinated me.
They’re never just structures. Bridges are connections — between boroughs, between people, and, in a way, between the past and the present. Every bolt and beam is both an engineering feat and a symbol of movement, of reaching across divides.
For this shot, I chose black and white. Stripping away the color felt right for the subject. It highlights the grit of the steel, the geometry of the cables, and the sheer weight of history built into the frame. At the same time, there’s a certain grace in the symmetry and the way the lines pull your eye toward the horizon.
New York is a city of endless energy, but moments like this remind you that its heartbeat is carried by the things that hold it all together.
