Keep Looking Up

Today is National UFO Day, which feels like a pretty good excuse to talk about one of the easiest things to forget as a photographer:

Look up.

Not everything worth photographing happens directly in front of you.

Sometimes the best frame is in the clouds, in the last glow over the horizon, in a strange streak of light across the night sky, or in that brief moment when you see something and have absolutely no idea what it was.

That curiosity is part of what makes photography fun.

A camera trains you to pay attention to things other people may walk right past — unusual light, patterns in the sky, storms rolling in, aircraft crossing the moon, stars appearing after sunset, or something that just looks… a little unusual.

You may never photograph a flying saucer.

But you might photograph something incredible simply because you were paying attention.

So on National UFO Day, consider this your reminder to keep the camera nearby and occasionally take your eyes off what is happening at ground level.

I’m not saying it was aliens.

I’m just saying the camera stays ready for a reason. 🛸👽
